There are thousands of begonia cultivars developed for commercial uses but the wax begonia is one of the four original species that was used to breed the common bedding begonias. Begonia cucullata is a type of wax begonia that is used heavily in the landscape as a bedding plant, but is also used in container plantings or baskets. These plants are sold under various names, including the 'Big' series, with red, copper or pink flowers some have bronze leaves. They are easy to grow and can be the center of any garden, and they even grow well indoors. There are more than 1,000 species of begonias, and they come in many shapes, colors, and sizes. Like other Begonia, they are valuable for part or dappled shade areas of the garden, although they also do well in a sunny position. Wax begonia is a hardy perennial that brings bright blooms to your home and garden for the majority of the year.
